Chicago - The Musical New York Theatre reviews
Good one-time experience.
I have loved Chicago's music for years, the feature film is one of the greatest of all time. However, I had never seen the original stage origin. Perhaps it's that I had already been to the top, but I could not help but feel like this was going back to the middle. Though at times beautifully constructed, it's just lacking that pizzazz and unrelenting vibrance the music demands. Rob Marshall's breakneck pace was indelible to the narrative. So much so that it, in a way, tainted the stage version forevermore. That being said, it's definitely worth a night out on the town.
Stripped down and fantastic
I adore musicals and enjoy being swept up in the fantasy of costumes and sets. Chicago is stripped down with minimal costume changes and the Orchestra and chorus line the only set. Not being familiar with the show, this took my date a moment to adjust to propless act, but once he understood the premise he got lost in the musical as well. It was great to see the musicians a prominent feature to each scene. My only complaint is in Act 1 there were times the singers were drown out by the music with this layout but after intermission this didn't seem to be a problem.
Beyond Expectations
Aside from the fact that they had put lighting equipment where our purchased seats were located and, therefore, moved us two sections away, the show itself was wonderful. It was obvious that these were professional performers. The singers and orchestra were spot on. I'm still singing the songs in my head and that was days ago! I had given the tickets to my mom as her Christmas present last year. It was nice to finally be able to say, "Merry Christmas, Mom!" three and a half months later. Thank you for bringing such great entertainment to our area. We'll be back.
